Winter tasks: ploughing stubble to sow sunflowers

Once we finished to sow cereals and garlic, we harvested olives and Christmas time has passed, it is the moment to prepare soil with the aim of sowing sunflowers in April. A big working depth is required to do this task, so we cannot do it with chissel firstly.

We use a disc ploughs tool we can have about 25cm of working depth with. With this tool the soil is really turned and it allows us not to have to work again few days before sowing sunflowers. This tool has another advantage: it is self-cleaning so it allows us to work without problems in our soil which is really sticky.

Picking up olives at Christmas

Between Christmas and new year, olive picking  time arrived in our area. This last campaign we have had a really good crop, the work was harder than other years before. The weather was sunny, but the wind hindered our canvas work. These canvas are using during the harvesting to cover the field around the olive trees. Then, the pickers threw the olives directly towards canvas and from there, the olives go to into our front loader to finally put them into the trailer.

Olives tree are very tall this year, so we have had to cut few brands (we use a Paterlini pneumatic scissors) to make easier our work with the Campagnola pneumatic harvester. At the end, our trailer was full and we had to be careful  to put the olives into the trailer during the last day.
