Independent suspension: A differentiating feature

In FIMA 2016, the Same Frutteto3 ActiveDrive was launched in Spain. This tractor has the new double wishbone suspension system in front axle like similar suspension system used in high power tractors. When our friends Pere and Lina sent us a few pictures of their Same Frutteto3 ActiveDrive and farm (vineyards, olive trees and cereals) in Castellví de la Marca (Barcelona), we decided to publish a post about this fantastic narrow tractor and specially about this new double  wishbone  suspension  system.  The new design, developed by SDF R&D Center and installed on SAME Frutteto3 tractors, tries to improve user’s vital aspects such as security, comfort and  maneuverability. Pere and Lina told us that this suspension system greatly improves the tractor behavior of both: on the road and in the field. They are very proud of their Same Frutteto3  ActiveDrive. And even, they are thinking of buying another one.

In Spain, the narrow tractor market is really important, so Same wants to offer a differentiating product. This type of specialist tractor needs to maintain its smallest height in order to work on orchard, reduced track in order to work on vineyards, and also needs maximum maneuverability without losing its stability.

A suspended live axle (solid or beam axle) is the most employed solution for this market segment, but it’s not perfect. This solution excessively raises the vehicle’s height, losing the advantages it had for orchard customers and stability on high slope terrains due to the rising of its center of gravity. Independent suspension system has the advantage of not having to raise the tractor’s hood, improving therefore stability since it maintains or even lowers the center of gravity, comparing it to solid axle systems. In addition, makes it easier for the wheels to take bigger turning angles (60º), without the tractor’s body or hood interfering.

Making independent each side of the front axle, makes the difference on comparing this suspension system to any other in the market. It’s the first time this suspension system is assembled on a small tractor, usually fitted on high power tractors; this system gives big advantages due to its principal functions:
  • Automatic tractor’s level control
  • Electronic bump and rebound control
  • Traction control
The suspension system of Same Frutteto3 ActiveDrive is composed of:
  • Suspension’s mechanical components: Each wheel’s suspension system, is built up with two wishbone (upper and lower), and a hydro-pneumatic actuator bumper.
  • Suspension’s electronic components: the electronic system will gather information from different sensors, such as: wheel speed, wheel steering angle, stroke, brake pedal pressure, and suspension’s activation button.
ActiveDrive suspension system’s three main functions:
  • Tractor’s leveling system: Independent suspension design lets the tractor absorb bigger irregularities, transmitting less effort to the tractor’s structure. In addition, the suspension’s characteristics make it possible for both wheels to work maintaining total contact with the ground and gives a better response on irregularities. It absorbs efforts in case of abrupt braking, and prevent from excessive nodding off.
  • Traction control: Thanks to the intelligent connection with the differential blocking, it’s possible for the system to recover traction totally when the system detects that one of the wheels has lost grip (speed and wheel spin sensors).
  • Bumpers control: the tractor’s electronic system analyzes every parameter in order to manage in the best way the suspension, on every possible scenario and the system will make an adaptable damping to avoid “rebound” effects.

Picking up stones: In search of perfection!!

​In general, good farmers are looking for the perfection in their tasks and, mainly, in their fields. One of these common works is picking up stones in order to avoid problems when they use their farming machinery.

Fields where there are a lot of stones are​ ​usually cool (the reason is that they can keep humidity). Stones avoid erosion and they help to avoid compaction that is generated by some works done during the campaign. On the other hand, if there are too many stones, you can have problems using farming machinery.​ ​For example, the following ones are specific problems for some tasks:
  • Sowing: when there are stones, the sowing task can be not very regular on whole field
  • Applying phytosanitary treatments: stones can generate a shade between plants and phytosanitary liquid.
  • Harvesting: The cutte bar of combine has to work at 5 cm from the ground in fields where there are sowed pulse vegetables. Therefore, a large stone can cause a cutte bar break of the combine.
Our great friend Oscar (from El Provencio - Cuenca) sent us a few pictures about his labor of picking up stones. As you can see, he uses the Kongskilde Stonebear machine that is specially designed for the removal and picking of stones from cultivated land in one operation.​ ​The Stonebear is designed to collect stones from approx. 28 mm (1”) to 30 cm (12”). It has a 4m working width, 20cm max. of working depth​ and tank capacity of 1800 litres.

In fields where you can find too many stones, the main problem is that the Stonebear machine has to discharge the hopper too often​ (about 20 times per hectare)​ since the limitation is the times you have to stop the machine to discharge the hopper.

In conclusion, this is an expensive and stressful work because Oscar has to paid 80 €/hour and Oscar has to transport all stones​ using his trailers (about 6 trailers per hectare)​ without breaks with the aim that the machine stops as little as possible.

La Floilana. Is the field the smallest or the biggest of the farm?

We visited the Massey Ferguson factory (Beauvais - France) in last February and we could meet with Marcos Vázquez, who is a great Galician farmer. He is the owner of Casa de Vázquez Farm and lover of farming machinery. These days, he is harvesting apples to make cider and we asked him for some pictures and information about this interesting work. Besides, he provided us some comments which are attached below.

Firstly, we show you information about his field where they are working:
  • Area: 550 s.q.m.
  • 15 apple trees. Planted perimeter in the field.
  • Production 2017: 1,900 kg of organic apple.
  • Price: 0.28 €/kg
  • Profits: €553.28 (0.99 €/s.q.m.)
  • Dedication: one person collects about 460kg of apple per day. Apart from that, the tasks of pruning and grazing take a dedication of 4 days per year.
The dilemma begins here and you need to open your mind about "small", "large", "productive", "profitable",... because they are so relative that any evidence as simple as this one of the "Froilana" field can disassemble them.

Casa de Vázquez Farm began to produce apples for cider around 20 years ago. The old owner of the farm (Marcos' father) emigrated to Switzerland in 70's where he could see perimeter plantations of fruit trees in a lot of farms. Also, there were some small farms with problems related to the machinery (even the tractor Ebro 44 was made large for 500 s.q.m). From these approaches, he thought apples could be profitable for his farm.

His apples are organic since 1999. It is an important goal about quality. This certification is generated by CREAGA (Regulatory council of ecological agriculture of Galicia). Progressively, changes have been introduced steadily: firstly, to increase production, and secondly, to reduce the production gap between campaigns.

The plantation in general is considered as something symbiotic with the production of beef (also with ecological certification and appellation of origin with Ternera Gallega Suprema). Cows can fertilize soil and they can feed pasture. The number of trees have been increased on farms that are less than 3,000 s.q.m.
As you can see in his graph, the production is not stable but they are renovating trees for 5 years and the graph of production and profits have a clear growing trend (this last fact thanks to the differentiation with the ecological certification).

Campaign 2017

It was a whooping campaign. The trees planted in the Trasliste field (Láncara Village) produced in excess and they had to carry out preventive shaking to avoid broken branches. Even so, some branches were severely broken. Regarding to the trees planted in the field of Franqueán (village of O Corgo), the frost finished completely with the production. The result was a production of 13,500kg. Nevertheless with the new planting, the expectation for this year was to exceed production in 2011 (15,500kg).

As for the price, a significant increase has been achieved, in recognition of the effort and perseverance in this type of work, an increase of 4% compared to the year 2015 (the production was considerable). Their whole production was sold to Customdrinks Company (Chantada). It is a company of Estrella Galicia Group, where Maeloc organic cider is elaborated.

Regarding the improvements in handling that were introduced, the most outstanding was the handling of the apple in big bags, and the load for transport to warehouse with a tool for frontloader of their tractor, that allows them to load directly trucks or trailers that is used for the transport to the factory. In 2015 a new trailer (manufactured by "Blanco y Oro" company) was purchased for carrying out the transportation tasks. Also they use a Massey Ferguson 5460 Dyna4 Tier III tractor to transport on road, which means a significant saving in money because it consumes only 55 litres of diesel in order to travel the 150 km round trip.

They hope to introduce the mechanized shake and the mechanized harvest. Nowadays, harvesting tasks are done manually, with family and salaried labor.
