Sunflowers in Turégano: sowing and assisted steering system

Our good friends and followers: Alberto Barrio and the twin brothers Cesar and Raúl Escribano sent us some pictures about their sowing sunflowers tasks in Turégano (Segovia)... thank you very much... the pictures are really nice.

Alberto told us that during the last campaign he sowed about 300ha with his Kuhn Maxima 2TS pneumatic seed drill. It is a seed drill of 7 rows and it has an air turbine that works at 540 r.p.m. (minimum at 470 r.p.m.). The distance between rows is of 60cm so the working width is of 4.2m. As it is a telescopic seed drill, the width for its transport is of 3m (the two last bottles can be folded). The used dose is of 51,000 seed/ha using a disc of 18 holes of 2.5mm each.

We phoned him yesterday and he said that he is very happy with this seed drill because he has worked for three years and he has never had any problem. The computer warms him if the machinery has any trouble e.g., any bottle can't throw seeds, alrhough this has only occurred once. By the way, the working speed can depend on the soil but it is normally about 6.5 km/h. He had a unit problem wearing out of rear inclined wheels, which waa solved with cog dishes (they were bought in Argentina) as you can see in some pictures.

Cesar and Raúl are using a Monosem seed drill as you can see in the video they sent us. We would like to highlight they Trimble EZ-Pilot assisted steering system with CFX-750. They use the RangerPoint RTX signal (it is a suscription signal which offers them a maximum error of 15cm) and it allows them to work even without driver :)... we will show you our assisted steering system when it will be installed.

Our olive trees are splendid

On these days when our cereals don't generate any job, we spend a few days working for our olive trees. The pictures you can see of the Stihl FS 56C light brushcutter were taken in May of the last year. The previous spring was very rainy (unfortunately, this one is being too much dry), so we couldn't sprayed with herbicide the weeds... as the result, we almost had a forest under each olive tree. Of course, we could change this situation very quickly with our Stihl light brushcutter. After that, we sprayed weeds with glyphosate and finally our olive trees are wonderful to harrow them with cultichissel.

Other task performed in this season is spraying in order to avoid problems in the full bloom, especially with aphids, mealybugs and whiteflies... we took advantage to throw out liquid fertilizer at the same time. With these tasks, the olive trees are magnificent. If this summer is not extremely dry, it could be possible to have a worthy harvest for the next winter.

After snow… The TUME JC Star XL 3000 seed drill

Our great friend Timo from Laihia (Finland) finished sowing this year on 1st May (he has malt barley and oats). Normally, he can start the sowing at the beginning of May. Barley is sensitive to frost in May, so it is risky to sow it early. This spring is been very dry and dusty and fields are becoming too dry. In many years it is more common having problems with rain than with dryness.

His new seed drill is Finnish-made Tume JC Star XL 3000. Basically, it is very similar to the old machine that worked fine for 17 years. It has tanks for seed, fertilizer that is put 2-3 cm under seed and a small tank for fertilizer that is put in the same level as seed. The total tank volume of 3,700 liters is adjustable for seed and fertilizer. The machine is designed for seeding ploughed or at least lightly harrowed field. Since, the summer is very short (time for the crop to grow is 3-4 months) it is the best method to put fertilizer under the level of seed. Small amount of fertilizer that is put in the same level with seed is for the beginning of growth and it is not compulsory. Many farmers don’t use it at all.

Amount of barley used is about 240 kg/ha that will give 500-550 plants per m2. Main fertilizer is Yara (23% N, 3% P, 6% K, 1% Mg, 6% S, 0.05% B, 0.3% Mn, 0.05% Zn and 0.0015% Se) that is used about 480 kg/ha. At the same level of seed is used 25 kg/ha of fertilizer with 12% N and 23% P.

For sowing, he mainly used MF 6130 2WD that has a very tight turning radius. It has enough power to drag the machine, but despite of 300 kg front weights the front is a bit light. MF 6470 works also fine with larger fields, but needs more space to turn.

Width of the seed drill is 3 m. So tramlining for spraying lines for a 15 m sprayer is made every 5 width. Tramlining and control of track markers are very easy with the control panel. Spacing of seeding discs is 12.5 cm and fertilizing disks 25 cm.

Thank you very much for your pictures and comments!!
