Pruning vineyards in La Mancha

Firstly, we have to say we do not have any vineyard, so we are not vineyards experts and maybe our comments are not the most accurate... perhaps our followers can add some information with more details. Despite this, we are going to try to talk about this topic which is complex and it is common in Spain and specially in La Mancha.

We visited our cousin last week, who was pruning vineyard. As you can see in pictures, this task is completely manual, but before that, they had used a pre-pruner machinery which lets them work easily and more cost effectively!

Each vine should only have five or six branches. The rest of branches are removed and the farmer try to remove mainly the oldest branches so vide can regenerate year after year. The aim is the vine generates a correct number of new branches and it can produce grapes properly, both in quantity and quality. In the last picture, you have an example of how not to prune vine because this prune method will generate a lot of new branches and vide could be dried if it needed more nutriments than it has to produce many grapes.

In other pictures, you can see a few vines which were adapted for vineyard trellis. Those vines allow them to use grape harvesters, for example.

  1. Buen reportaje. Tienes que hacer uno haciendo los sarmientos y unas chuletillas, jeje.
    Un saludo.

    Hello twins friends,

That vineyard looks fantastic. I like vines and good wine. However, this task in winter should be hard because of the cold. I fondly remember my grandfather doing this task.

Good luck with the crop of this year.

    Regards,

    Hola amigos gemelos,

    Saludos,
    EUCAMAR
