Feed for next months. Ensiling rye and vetch

It’s harvesting time in Spain. One of the typical works for farmers is preparing silage feed for their animals; they have to be fed during the next cold months. At this time, we show pictures and comments about one of our followers Diego Gala... he is carrying out ensiling tasks in her dairy farm in Escalona del Prado - Segovia.

He works his 70ha of rye and vetch and 30ha of other farmers that he has acquired. The price is 0.018€/kg. Maybe it is cheaper, taken into consideration that one hectare can generate about 30,000kg (in case of the corn crop it can generate about 75,000kg), it will be an important investment. He ensiled about 2,000,000kg (each cow eats 20kg/day)... he has some silos because vetch is not mixed with cereals or rye (this product has more proteins).

The silage process begins when he mows her crop and one day later it is chopped. For that, he uses three trailers of 15,000kg so his Claas Jaguar doesn't need to stop. The crop is downloaded directly in silos, where it is trodden to eject air in order to get an extra-compact feed... trodden task is really very important. When chopped material is compacted, it is covered with plastic canvas for 21 days.

Diego told us the harvest for silage crops are treated in the same way than crops are sowed to harvest grain throughout the year. The main difference is that when he sows, the seed dose is double for silage crop, e.g., he used 250kg/ha for rye.

    Hello

You said the price is 0.018€/kg, I thought the price will be 0.18€/kg.
I wonder how you manage to have so low prices anyway.

    Many thanks in advance
